This autobiography tells the story of Wilma Mankiller's life and also the culture of her Cherokee tribe. I think this book can teach readers about what life is really like in a current day tribe, without the stereotyping of Native Americans. It is a very long novel which would most likely be used in an 8th grade setting when learning about Cherokee culture.

This book is dedicated to my brother Louis Donald Mankiller, who gave up much of his youth to feed and clothe his siblings. Then in 1990, he donated a kidney to me, enabling me to continue with my life and work in good health.
