Eggs all over the floor!!! Cook threw up her hands--and the little witch Dorrie and her cat Gink were in trouble! It was the Big Witch's birthday and now her cake would not be ready on time--in fact, there might not be a cake at all, for Cook had no more eggs. Dorrie and Gink decided to help by getting more eggs from the Egg Witch, but Thinnever Vetch was lurking in the forest, waiting for an opportunity to make mischief. And this is just what she does, with Dorrie, the Big Witch, Cook, and the Egg Witch all in danger of coming under her wicked spell. How Dorrie outwits Thinnever Vetch is an exciting, chaotic, funny tale that young witch fans will savor.… (plus d'informations)

The illustrations are the star in this book. They are charming. Dorrie runs into trouble on her way to get eggs and is not listened to by the adults in her life. Eventually she is able to warn them and they finish the day with cake. ( )

Dorrie - the endearing little witch whose hat was always on crooked, and whose stocking were always mismatched - returns for her eighth adventure in this delightful little picture-book, a long-remembered, well-loved treasure (along with the other Dorrie books) of my childhood. Apparently, it is treasured by others as well, if the condition of the copy I requested through ILL (Inter-Library Loan) is anything to go by. This book has been read to bits, with pages coming loose from the binding, and little pieces missing, here and there!

When Gink, Dorrie's faithful feline companion, gets underfoot, causing an accident in the kitchen, witch and cat set out to buy some more eggs, so Cook will be able to make Dorrie's mother, the Big Witch, a suitable birthday cake. But an encounter with the troublesome Thinnever Vetch, on the way to the Egg Witch's farm, leads to unexpected complications involving the loss of Dorrie's hat (as well as one of her galoshes), and a misunderstanding regarding the money Dorrie leaves, in exchange for the eggs. How can she explain matters in time to prevent disaster, when the Big Witch won't let her speak...?

Any child who has ever felt silenced by the adults in her life - which is to say, almost all children - will identify with Dorrie's frustration in Dorrie and the Birthday Eggs, and will be hoping for her eventual triumph. The illustrations - always top-notch - are particularly appealing here, especially in those scenes with purple and red accents (Coombs' artwork tends to be black and white, with one or two color accents, depending upon the work). I could pore over these books all day! I did pore over them all day, when a child, and continue to be utterly mystified by the fact that they remain out-of-print. Delightful, entertaining, adorable: the Dorrie books are sure to please any young witch-lover or magic-believer! ( )

Dorrie visits the Egg Witch to pick up ingredients for Big Witch's birthday cake. On the way she passes Thinnever Vetch who casts spells to try to capture Dorrie and the others. It takes some work for Big Witch and Egg Witch to believe Dorrie. Mix of black/white and color illustrations. ( )

The adventures of Dorrie, a little witch with a crooked hat and socks that don't match. She lives in a house with a tower, with her mother the big witch, and her black cat, Gink, and cook. They have adventures but everything always ends well. By the author of "Dorrie and the Haunted House".
