NCLA Review -This novel is an eye opener for anyone uneducated about religious cults. Purporting to be Christian based, they are really all about power and money for the cult leaders. Prostitution and child abuse are evils imposed on brainwashed members. Elise Friedman is searching for her long-dead birth mother who had lived in Heidelberg, Germany. In the course of her search, Elise becomes involved with a dangerous cult her mother joined as a young person. How Elise is rescued and saved held my attention. The human need to belong is emphasized throughout the book. Jesus is a loving and giving God not authoritative and demanding as represented by this cult. On Elise Friedman's eighth birthday, she lost her mother and any connection to her mysterious past. Raised by her loving stepfather, Elise has spent years trying to learn the truth about her mother, Catrina, and her birth family in Germany, but still knows very little. Now a young woman in college, Elise is traveling to her homeland of Germany to uncover her family's past, but what she finds is much more harrowing than she ever suspected. It was easy to connect with Elise as she searched for answers about her mother. However, she made rash decisions that landed her in trouble! "The Black Cloister" finished fairly well but it didn't leave me emotionally moved with was a shame because the rest of the novel was gripping. ( )
