Updated to include Paul McCartney's knighting and the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Philip Norman's biography of the Beatles is the definitive work on the world's most influential band--a beautifully written account of their lives, their music, and their times. Now brought completely up to date, this epic tale charts the rise of four scruffy Liverpool lads from their wild, often comical early days to the astonishing heights of Beatlemania, from the chaos of Apple and the collapse of hippy idealism to the band's acrimonious split. It also describes their struggle to escape the smothering Beatles' legacy and the tragic deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Witty, insightful, and moving, Shout! is essential reading not just for Beatles fans but for anyone with an interest in pop music.… (plus d'informations)

I'll just say this. I've been a fan of the Beatles for almost five full decades. Their first single, Love Me Do came out less than 24 hours before I was born. I heard the Beatles from birth. My older brother and sister kept me current with each new song. I was struck dumb by the deaths of John and George. I've seen countless Beatles tribute bands, seen Beatlemania! three times, seen Paul three times, watched all the movies, watched the full Anthology series, seen the Backbeat stage play, and read hundreds of articles on the band. And, to top it off, I've read over 60 books on the Beatles, both as a band, and the four individuals.

Through all of that, this is the singular best book I've ever read on the Beatles. Period. ( )

"It was the rooftop concert with their hair blowing into their eyes, with Ringo in a red plastic mac, George in green trousers, John in a ladies' short fur coat. It was four musicians playing together as no four musicians ever could or ever would again."
I got tears in my eyes whenever I saw pictures of them in the book and I got tears in my eyes when I reached the moment when John died and a few more times. The only time I rushed was towards the end and I skipped some of their details about the songs and money and deals.
I will always love this band.

All'epoca (1981) l'unica biografia dei Beatles disponibile.
Ma con l'arrivo dei documentatissimi studi di Mark Lewisohn,
e di Kevin Ryan & Brian Kehew, si rivela per quello che è: spazzatura!... ( )

Good view into the business of being the Beatles. Very pro-John and anti-Paul, would have preferred the author to remain neutral, otherwise, informative book. ( )

Read this first back in the early eighties after Lennon was killed... have leafed through it again here and there... a very strong, if pro-John, bio of the boys. ( )

John alone seemed to get it right, back in the seventies' bleary dawn when everyone around him was mourning the end of an era, the disintegration of a movement, the extinction of a culture, the death of a dream. "It's just a rock group split up," he said with his usual withering bluntness. "It's not important."
