A Classic in the Field of Christian Counseling Competent to Counsel has helped thousands of pastors, students, laypersons, and Christian counselors develop both a general approach to Christian counseling and a specific response to particular problems. Using biblically directed discussion, nouthetic counseling works by means of the Holy Spirit to bring about change in the personality and behavior of the counselee. As Dr. Jay Adams points out in his introduction, "I have been engrossed in the project of developing biblical counseling and have uncovered what I consider to be a number of important scriptural principles. . . . There have been dramatic results. . . . Not only have people's immediate problems been resolved, but there have also been solutions to all sorts of long-term problems as well." Since its first publication in 1970, this book has gone through over thirty printings. It establishes the basis for and an introduction to a counseling approach that is being used in pastors' studies, in counseling centers, and across dining room tables throughout the country and around the world.… (plus d'informations)

Great for learning how to counsel and what it takes for you to be a competent biblical counselor
  JourneyPC | Sep 26, 2022 |
Bold. He makes no room for the existence of suffering, and does not provide advice on how to counsel sufferers. If someone enters your office seeking counsel on a matter clearly resulting from their own sin, than his method is acceptable. However, it would be a mistake to assume that the method herein described may be applied to any and every individual who may seek counseling. Jesus confronted some people, and simply comforted others. Not all pain and confusion in the world is a direct consequence of that person's sin (see the book of Job).

However, often it is, and in such cases, this book lays out a good argument from scripture on how to counsel such people. ( )

A biblical counseling classic. Indeed, this is the body of work that started the modern biblical counseling movement. Though he continued to refine his thought in later years, this might be Adams most influential book. ( )

such a great book... while part of me wishes i could have read this years ago, the Lord knew i would only be ready for it at this point in my life
"Are Christians competent to counsel? of course they are - but not enough of them, and some are not as competent as they might be. These days of uncertainty, confusion and transition among many psychologists and counselors (and misleading or false teachers, IMHO) afford an unprecedented opportunity for Christians to take the lead rather than to lag behind in this vital area of life. The opportunity must no be lost. But to seize it demands courage and forthrightness. Therefore, let Christian counselors resolve that by the grace of God they shall endeavor to become the most thoroughly competent counselors that can be found." ( )

I love that Jay Adams insists on taking a Biblical View on life matters. He realizes that in all circumstances, the Word of God is our standard and tool for life. In this book, and in his series on counseling, Jay Adams walks through providing hope and direction to our brothers and sisters in Christ. This book greatly altered my way of helping others and forced me to examine my own actions and behavior in life. In particular, the perspective on Love being a commandment of God hits home. ( )

As far as I am concerned about you, my brothers, I am convinced that you especially are abounding in the highest goodness, richly supplied with perfect knowlege and competent to counsel one another. -- Romans 15:14 (Williams)

[Introduction] Like many other pastors, I learned little about counseling in seminary, so I began with virtually no knowledge of what to do.
On the first day of an elementary psychology course at Johns Hopkins University some twenty years ago, a professor sat on his desk silently reading the morning newspaper.
[Conclusion] In this volume, I have tried to show that the minister, Christian workers, and indeed every Christian, may consider himself at least potentially competent to counsel.
