I couldn't read it right through. I kept falling asleep. There's something about it that didn't work as a book. It's not "a good read". What I did manage to get down was sweet and I can see why Ms Surovtsov wanted to write it but the story telling lacked a style that kept it going. It was a sort of "Year in Provence" story without the humor or the English usage that would have made it read better for me. What it did do that was valuable was point out the absolute necessity for people to learn and practice tolerance, especially if they intend to try to share the same space as people of a differing culture. The lessons she and her George learned would have useful if they could have been jammed into the brains of George W. Bush and his Administration and made to form a part of their memory bases that would clutch in whenever they were working on the subject of foreign policy. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique
On vacation in Mexico, George and Vicka, a professional couple from the Bay area, fall in love with a sleepy seaside town and optimistically decide to build a second home. In a series of hilarious encounters, they soon learn that nothing prepared them for dealing with such crooks as Manual, an unscrupulous architect who, with his clan, has perfected the fleecing of gringos to the state of the art; or the beautiful Alicia, whose appetite for dishonest schemes would put a hungry piranha to shame. In the struggle not to lose their investment, George and Vicka acquire a new wisdom and mucho experience. In the process, they meet many colorful and interesting people. In this humorous tongue-in-cheek tale, the reader participates in the building of the dream house, which becomes the vehicle for the couple's own personal growth and their understanding of the unique and colorful individuals they were privileged to meet south of the border.
