He composes wry, sardonic letters hectoring friends and enemies, and invents a lurid colonial past for every old man he encounters. His greatest solace is cricket and the symbolic defeat of the empire at the hands of the mighty West Indies. Although subject to attacks of bitterness and remorse, his captivating sense of humour never deserts him as he struggles to come to terms with the horror of his past and the meaning of his pilgrimage to England. [Pilgrims Way] is Gurney’s 2nd book published in 1988. As always, the author has gifted us, the readers, with another compelling story, written with compassion; less a classic ‘coming-of-age” tale than–as the title suggests– more a journey of the self.
This story of Daud seems a bit more congested than Gurney’s other books and may need a bit more attentiveness and maybe a bit of patience. I really couldn’t follow the cricket-related stuff but that was not a big deal. Otherwise, this is another excellent novel from the now Noble Prize winner. (
