Grandad magic was special to Alison. She wishes to learn some tricks of her own. One day at lunch, one of grandad's magic tricks does not go as planned and almost ends disastrously as mom's decorative glass dogs nearly crash to the ground...until Rupert saved the day! After the almost disastrous lunch, mom decided to make some changes to lunch and leave the glass dogs on the fireplace shelf and use unbreakable plastic plate and tableware. Grandad offers a box of chocolate to mom for her troubles last week but guess who strikes again? Rupert! Grandad admits that even the best of performers can't get it right all the time. Indeed, we can't get it right all the time! ( )

Grandad's magic by Bob Graham tells the story of Alison's grandfather who can do magic. In the beginning of the story Alison's grandad is very good at performing magic tricks like making a piece of chocolate appear. However, as the story goes on Alison becomes better at juggling, but she begins her grandad's magic is more of a trick when he hides chocolate under the dogs chair for Ally's mother, but the dog eats it before he can.
The book is written in a way that reminds me of a comic book. Each part is written with a small illustration to help the reader better understand what is happening. The illustrations in the book are very important. In some parts of the book, a reader would not be able to understand what is happening exactly, without the illustration. For example, at the end of the story the reader would not know that the chocolates disappeared because Ruppert, the dog, ate them without the illustration of it. ( )

Allison is inspired and in awe of her grandad's magic tricks. Even though his tricks are simple and he messes up she still things it is awesome. Allison's mom often gets annoyed with some of grandad's "magic". He tends to mess up things in the house. The author shows a cute story about a family relationships. Allison loves her family and to learn from her elders. Students could understand that everything is not perfect. Sometimes what you do with a family member is not important. Just being with them brings joy. ( )

This story is about a grandpa who loves to do magic and at sunday dinners, teaches his granddaughter a new trick. When his granddaughter finally learns to juggle which she was been practicing really hard at, grandpa is inspired to do his best trick of all, pulling the table cloth of the table. While this is successful, one of mom's special breakable decorations almost gets broken. At the next Sunday dinner, everything is different, and the table is "magic proof."

This is a cute humorous story that I would definitely share with children k-3. ( )
