It would have been cuter if not ambiguous, I opine. Rebecca does manage to get the moose away before her family finally comes outside, and so the only evidence is the destroyed garden. Bur did Rebecca destroy the garden to punish her family for not listening to her?

It's easier to read as if the moose was real, and the soft pretty pictures wouldn't fit such a dark theme. But when Mom says {Y}ou know there are no moose around here," the author is leaving room for that darker interpretation.
