When his friend's death is ruled a suicide, Kevin Connor - a hustler by trade, sleuth by default - sets out to prove a case of murder. It doesn't help matters that the victim's grown children, who disapproved of his gay lifestyle, are only concerned about their inheritance. But they aren't Kevin's only problem. His highly strung mother has moved in with him, and she knows nothing about the way he earns his living...… (plus d'informations)

Funny, fast and highly enjoyable. ( )

This turned out to be a fun little mystery. Early on it becomes obvious that this is as much a light, almost screwball, comedy as it is a mystery. If you just go along for the ride, you’re in for an enjoyable read. The deceptively humorous story makes the twist to the mystery at the end all the more surprising. Kevin is an engaging character; in spite of what his age and profession might make you believe otherwise. He is also surrounded by a large group of equally well-defined characters, including some of Kevin’s customers, who are portrayed in a quite non-judgmental fashion. If the story has any weakness at all it’s in the last part of the story which stretches credulity just a little bit too far. Otherwise, it's a really good and worth your time read. Those that like to follow award winners will be pleased to know that this was the winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Best Mystery in 2009. ( )

Funny, fast-paced murder mystery as a high-class male “escort” tries to solve the mystery of the death of a friend, ruled a suicide by the police. With several plot twists, the ultimate solution seems almost like an afterthought instead of the more common “working the same case” trope (in which two crimes turn out to be related), here the various crimes turn out to be unrelated, which is a lot less satisfying to the reader, but the ride is enjoyable. I was just tagging the book and realized I had to select a "minimal/no sex" tag for a book about a rent boy. Ha-ha.

I read through the reviews and found a few negative points, quite valid ones, too, that should bring the stars down. Yes, there were some not very appropriate jokes at other characters' expense, but be real. How often do we do it in real life without even realizing it at times? It's unfortunate, but true.
The mystery aspect might be far-fetched but the story grabs your attention, sucks you right in and won't let you go until the end. There should be something said for that.
The final chapters were a bit over the top - criminal after criminal confessing to their crimes. But - oh, well, - there was a point to it. You thought you figured it out, but ...you didn't! :P
5 stars. Filing it under "favorites".

One day, I'll write books I can dedicate to my parents and children; this isn't one of them. Kids, if you're reading this, put it down till you're twenty-one.

So, Marty, this is for you. It's not necessarily the kind of thing you'd like, but then again, neither was I when we first met. Sixteen years later, we're still together. I hope the book grows on you too. I love you.
