This book is about a 7 year old girl named Kirsy. She is going to have her 8th birthday party in the Dominican Republic! She was born in New York but her family came from the Dominican Republic. She talks about how she sees kids working hard to help their families, all the different animals, and her 8th birthday party!

I think this book is a really good way to teach kids here about the Dominican Republic and how different it is there. I think the kids would really like the pictures of the beach and the Ferrari made out of sand! Would be a great lesson to talk about where our families came from. I also really like that they used real photographs instead of illustrations!

Krisy Rodriguez will spend her eighth birthday in a special place of the Dominican Republic. She will also get to spend Christmas with her other family at this wonderful place. She lives in New York now and tells the story about her visit to the Dominican Republic. This was a great read. Reading about the life a young girl who truly lives in two worlds and the effect is has on her really intrigued me. I would love to share this book with my students to not only teach them about the country of the Dominican Republic, but to teach them what it is like to appreciate family. ( )

The next day she returns to New York where it is cold and where the rest of her famly is.
I enjoyed this book because it told about her life and in both worlds.

Title: My two Worlds
Author: Ginger Gordon
Summary of Book: This book is about a girl named Kirsy Rodriquez who is soon to turn eight year old. She is a Dominican American girl who lives in New York City but explains and contrasts her two worlds. She speaks Spanish as her native language and frequently returns to her island home.
Personal Reaction: I think it is neat to see both worlds of Kirsy. She is proud to belong to both worlds because each is a special part of her. Martha Cooper, which is the illustrator the book uses full-color photographs to highlight the lively story of Kirsty’s two worlds. My Two Worlds is easy to see that it is told from Kirsy’s point of view and that it takes place in New York City and Puerto Plata. I love how Kirsy calls both places home and enjoys what her different cultures have to offer. I think that it is very important to educate the students about different cultures and this would be a great book to do so.
Extension Ideas:
1. Have students write a biography of where their families originated. This will be a parent-involvement activity that will help the students learn about their background and culture. Then the students can read aloud to the class so that many different cultures can be expressed.
