Mathematical craftwork has become extremely popular, and mathematicians and crafters alike are fascinated by the relationship between their crafts. The focus of this book, written for mathematicians, needleworkers, and teachers of mathematics, is on the relationship between mathematics and the fiber arts (including knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, and quilting). Each chapter starts with an overview of the mathematics and the needlework at a level understandable to both mathematicians and needleworkers, followed by more technical sections discussing the mathematics, how to introduce the mathematics in the classroom through needlework, and how to make the needlework project, including patterns and instructions.… (plus d'informations)

I'm so excited to start this! The library got it for me - I think they actually bought this one. It looks like there are a couple of embroidery projects to try in here as well as the usual knitting/crochet things.

I was not disappointed. The projects seem evenly divided between knitting, crochet, quilting and embroidery. My favorites were the torii, along with a discussion of every possible way to make a knit stitch (mmm, donuts) and the blackwork project. ( )

Ten different projects, each with detailed mathematics (mostly topology and graph theory, some symmetry) and suggestions for using the project in the classroom. Although a lot of the math was too advanced for me, I enjoyed reading about it and learning something new about needlework. The photographs and other illustrations are well done and the book overall is very beautiful. ( )

A novel and practical approach to mathematics. If you're not mathematically inclined, the needlework ( quilting, embroidery, crochet, knitting) projects are well photographed, make interesting reading and fascinating starting points for further exploring. ( )

To my grandmothers, who were excellent needleworkers but didn't know they were mathematicians.

--Carolyn Yackel

To my mother, who knits, and my father, who sews---both needleworkers who ought to know by now that they're mathematicians.
