Fiction. Literature. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:Hugo Whittierâ??failed poet and former kept manâ??is a wily misanthrope with a taste for whiskey, women, and his own cooking. Afflicted with a rare disease that will be fatal unless he quits smoking, Hugo retreats to his once aristocratic familyâ??s dilapidated mansion, determined to smoke himself to death without forfeiting any of his pleasures. To his chagrin, the world that he has forsaken is not quite finished with him. First, his sanctimonious older brother moves in, closely followed by his estranged wife, their alleged daughter, and his gay uncle. Infuriated at the violation of his sanctum, Hugo devises hilariously perverse ploys to send the intruders packing. Yet the unexpected consequences of his schemes keep forcing him to reconsider, however fleetingly, the more wholesome ingredients of love, and life itself.

I enjoyed this quick read about a grumpy dying guy whose every attempt at controlling his life and death is thwarted by his disorderly family. About a third of the way in I noticed to my surprise that it was written by a woman. Surprise because of the descriptions of the lead character's obsession with having sex with every woman who crosses his path. ( )

Just wanted to finish, Totally unlikable main characterssssss (not just Hugo) and annoying storyline. Was so happy to put this down. ( )

I have never disliked a protagonist more. I didn't think Hugo's misanthropism served the story; it only made him incredibly gross, hateful and offensive. After 350 pages of drAAAma, everybody lives happily ever after. So really nothing happens. This book made my ass tired. ( )

wow! usually a sample is just enough for me to decide about a book, but this I REALLY didn't like, and had to go back to reviews, which made me think I should give it more of a chance. But, life is too short.

Ultimately frustrating, due to lack of resolution. Plenty of plot in the stew, but the author doesn't seem to know what to do with it. Amusing, witty sentences. Loved the embedded recipes also. It's possible however, that the whole House M.D.-style loveable curmudgeon has just been done to death. ( )
