Good, as usual for a Justine Davis. Again as usual - she takes a pretty standard trope (two, actually - cowboy and city girl, and cop dealing with the aftermath of a bad event) and fills it out with real people. The characters are solid, and their actions make sense with who they are. Grant knows what works for him - his ranch, and the wild landscape it's set in. Mercy's dealing with a lot of stuff - the death of her partner (the cop she's been teamed with for years), and the implications of that death, which we (and Grant) don't find out about until quite late in the story. Visiting Grant clarifies things Mercy's been dealing with for years - and happy ever after happens. The Fortune connection is not strong here, though Kate Fortune gave Grant an Appaloosa he calls Joker who is a trigger and catalyst for several events. And there are conversations and phone calls that advance the arc of the Fortune's Children series - Grant and Mercy both have ties of various sorts (Grant's are stronger) to the family, but they're not in the thick of things. Fun.
Huh. Well, it has been eight years - but I picked this up to read and did not remember at all that I'd read it before. Not even Joker sounded familiar. Hmph. Well, still a good story, with Justine's usual excellent characters, and just what I needed today. ( )
