The mystery was good. I didn't anticipate all the twists and turns it took. I too thought gambling when the man approached Caroline in Sante Fe. I did finally guess one of the people behind it after an obscure clue caught my interest--and I had sort of suspected the other person also but later discarded that for the most part.
I could understand Caroline's uneasiness around law enforcement. It's always a bit nerve-wracking to be around them, I think. But after we find what happened to her at 16, it is more understandable. I was surprised that no one reached out to the grandparent when they couldn't find the mother, but . . . I know little of how law enforcement for juveniles works, so that might be the norm--plus it sounds like the officer involved wasn't on the straight and narrow like he should have been, so he might not have done everything in the "by the book" way.
The history of the quilt was interesting to me. I think I vaguely remember mention of quilts being used in the underground railroad, but I didn't realize there were specific patterns used also. It makes sense. I did guess that part slightly before the author revealed it, though I didn't guess how it tied in with the story until that was revealed by the author. ( )
