I was reminded of BookStumpers and someone asked about this book so I pulled it off the shelf for a reread. It holds up well, a bit thinnner in plot than I recalled but still very well done. The characters are very real even though the adventure drives the plot. The ending esp. is well done. A nice reread. This book, even though it was written 31 years ago, caught my attention from the very first page. You're thrust into a different era, where people and planets are not all what they seem. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good yet light adventure read that will keep you guessing til the end. I'm really not sure why I have this book, but it was at the top of the pile when I needed something to read. I was hoping for a nice little story with a bunch kids, instead I get a rather boring story where not much happens and a very sedate earth. It was a short story, but made absolutely no sense from character motivations to the actual science. It reads like someone wanted to write a book that highlighted teamwork, patriotism and generally being good and set in space. Its a boring story, with boring characters, and a plot that went nowhere. But We Are Not Of Earth was, I think, my introduction to sci fi, and it holds up very well on a re-read. • Simply written, but not insultingly so. Appropriate for ages 10 and up.• No gender weirdness whatsoever. It is so incredibly rare to find a sci fi book that (a) treats men and women as exact equals and (b) doesn't make a big issue of it.• Classic bildungsroman.• Introduces you to some of the major preoccupations of sci fi - critique of society, exploration, mental expansion.• Has characters that are in many ways similar to the characters of [book: Ender's Game] - like Ender's Game, it is a gifted child's manifesto.• The themes of estrangement/heritage are incredibly evocative to a preteen beginning to search for their adult identity.----• Tendency to add "space" to words in highly gratuitous fashion, ex: "space geography," "space credits." Also, slightly irritating futuristic names, although by no means a major-league offender in this respect (could be way worse).• Slightly old-fashioned diction. You know it's a good book when the worst thing I have to say about it is "slightly old-fashioned diction"!
