This book is takes a comprehensive look at the westward expansion of the United States from the expeditions of Lewis and Clark to the California Gold Rush. Lewis and Clark both wanted to create friendships and peace with the Native Americans. This was short-lived as they had slaves. Their explorations were seen as important because they curbed the land grabbing desires of Spain, Great Britain and Russia. as In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which allowed for the forced removal and relocation of several Native American tribes. This allowed many settlers to move westward. The federal government often promised more money and food for the Indians but this never happened. Many died due to disease and warfare. The westward expansion also included the annexation of Texas from Mexico. By 1848, gold was discovered in California, which was recently acquired from Mexico. People who lived in this region were mixed between farmers and cattle ranchers. The gold rush had many negative consequences. Forced labor became commonplace and disease spread fast. The advent of the California Gold Rush signified a momentous period in American history. This new land would serve as a major force in developing a powerful nation.

This book is well written and has timelines and pictures placed among the text. The book does a good job at merging many important themes such as slavery, westward expansion, disease and exploration. The legal descriptions of the Indian Removal Act are appropriate for students in grades 5-8. This is an easy read but the book has a lot of good information about American History. There are important letters and documents to support the text and allow the student to explore the intent of individuals through the course of history. The narrative style of this book will keep students engaged with the text. ( )
