People who lived in this region were mixed between farmers and cattle ranchers. The gold rush had many negative consequences. Forced labor became commonplace and disease spread fast. This book is well written and has timelines and pictures placed among the text. The book does a good job at merging many important themes such as slavery, westward expansion, disease and exploration. The legal descriptions of the Indian Removal Act are appropriate for students in grades 5-8. This is an easy read but the book has a lot of good information about American History. There are important letters and documents to support the text and allow the student to explore the intent of individuals through the course of history.
