First things first: the storyline is somewhat original, and some things you'll never find in most of the old and new fantasy world, you'll find in here, like a servant in a wheelchair.
That said, there was not one character I could connect with, and the difficult to pronounce names, even for me being bililingual (english, german, dutch, indonesian, dannish, french and a little thai) it mae me fall over my tongue many a time.
Often when I read fantasies, the author didn't need to explain who he or she was talking about, you knew it right away. Here the author often uses lots of words to explain who is in the story "a 1. male , 2. pureblood, 3. elf, 4. with wavy chesnut brown hair 5. white priestly robes.... It might be me, but the writing style is a bit to wooly at time and at other moment to blunt.
I still don't get the "harlequin" thing and beside that it feels like throughout the book I'm sort of feeling the author's anger towards something (society?), someone?
Like in this sentence: "Humans do not value honor and care more about exploiting the weak". Something even within a fantasy book I would not agree with.
the demonic in this book is what turned me off the most. That said, some readers into gothic stuff might like it all. But for me the whole story was to dark and in the end I really hated Tioja.
If a book is easy to read, and to be enjoyed, I do not think an author needs to explain her story in the end, or give away what happens to some of the characters. Also the huge list explaining who is who is not adding to the enjoyment of reading the book, to the contrary.
I'm sorry, not to happy with this book, but hopefully someone else enjoys it. Not one reader is the same, we are all unique.
One hoorah for the author, using bookfunnel made it easier to read the book in googleplay where I have most of my ebooks. ( )
