This is the third picture-book adaptation of Aesop's fable of a town mouse and his country cousin that I have read, following upon the versions by Jan Brett and Carol Jones. It is possible that I have simply reached my saturation point with this story, although I usually enjoy reading different adaptations of the same tale.

However that may be, I simply didn't enjoy Janet Stevens The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, finding the illustrations somewhat too "cutsey" for my taste, and the narrative just a tad too self-consciously "contemporary." I felt a similarly vague sense of dissatisfaction with Stevens' Androcles and the Lion An Aesop Fable, and have come to the conclusion that there really isn't anything wrong with her work - it just isn't for me. This is a classic tale of a town and country mouse. They swap homes and both decide they like their own lifestyle better. The book has good illustrations of both lifestyles and is very detailed. All elementary students would enjoy this book.
