Fantasy. Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

Northwest Oriole is a land of small countries and many universities, where scholarship is greatly regarded. Choosing a school is thus a matter of great weight, no matter your rank or wealth.

Hal has always known where he's going, because he is the Imperial Duke of Fillering Pool, and the dukes have always gone to either Zabour or Tara. Since Zabour fell into the sea, it'll have to be Tara.

Theoretically.

At some point he'll have to write them.

Clary Sage is a novella loosely connected to the Grenwing & Dart series, taking place before those books commence.

Hal has been Duke of Fillering Pool since he was seven, and now that the test scores have come out, he finds himself deciding between what's expected of him and where he wants to go to college.

A fun novella focusing on one of the side characters of the Greenwing & Dart series a few years before the events of that series. Though it means the end result isn't all that surprising (if you've read the series, you know where he went), it was especially fun to see his first meeting with some of the characters from the main series. How lovely to have Hal's back story -- just a moment in time before he becomes the character we know and love in the larger series. ( )

An entirely enjoyable story. It would be a nice introduction to the series, or the universe; as I've already read everything available, it's a lovely extra bit, with clarification and new depths to a familiar character. I like Hal, and this is a great glimpse of him before Morrowlea. And just a touch of Jemis at the end. ( )

We are with Hal, very much the Duke of Feathering Pool as he makes the momentous decision to attend Marrowlea instead of Tara. If like others in his family he had predictably gone to Tara he would not have met Jemis and though he is neither Greenwing nor Dart, that series would be quite different without Hal. ( )
