Brian Williams brings to the forefront what you've always known about racism and racial disparity in the back of your mind. He puts his feelings of anguish at the lack of resources for proper Healthcare, anger at the "good Ole boy" and "don't make waves" systems, and despair in not being able to make enough changes out for the world to see and understand the delimia better. His is a powerful story that every sentient soul should read in order to help bring the information in the back of your mind to the conscious level where your heart can maybe do better.

Well written, informative book. As per usual, the rich prosper and the poor get poorer. For years I have been reading about the inequities in our country. I once thought that shining a light on truth would actually change things, but I no longer believe that. Thank god for this surgeon and others like him. ( )

Dr. Brian H. Williams is a rarity: a black male surgeon. Luckily for us, he is also an astute observer and a solid writer. I learned a lot from this book about his experiences dealing with racism in his field as well as leading to the frequency of black men in the trauma bay. Dr. Williams is well known for being a surgeon in the spotlight following the Dallas police shootings. This book covers those but also covers much more.

P.S. I found it surprising how little was about COVID - perhaps this book was mostly written before the pandemic started? ( )

Interesting perspective of a trauma surgeon on his career and his perspective on racial changes in the world and medicine. Entertaining and though provoking ( )

This is a well-written book on a difficult but important subject in contemporary America - the epidemic of gun violence sweeping our nation. Written from a unique perspective, that of an African American trauma surgeon on the front lines of treating some of the thousands of gunshot victims in the United States each year, The Bodies Keep Coming is at times heartbreaking to read. Dr. Williams writes with an openness and honesty about his internal struggles as his career rises while he is plunged daily into the morass of senseless violence washing through his community. As he grows in skill and understanding, he comes to realize that his gift may not lie in stemming the tide of victims on an individual basis, but on shaping the policies that could help curb the flow on a much wider scale. Within these four walls, I have wrecked the lives of far too many Black mothers.

In treating these patients, I see myself. In comforting their families, I see mine. For me, working to end the epidemic of gun violence is more than an academic pursuit or my vocation. It is personal.
America always manages to remind people with skin like mine that no matter how many professional successes, medals, and awards we earn, we should never forget our place.
I had no idea my life as an academic surgeon would make me complicit in a system built on the invisible exploitation of the bodies of my people.
If we showed such little regard for the health and safety of white suburban children, I knew there was no chance for my patients, who were mostly urban Black boys and girls. And if we don't care about kids, white or Black, what chance do any of us have?
I had a front row seat to death and healthcare inequity, replicated in impoverished Black communities across America, being accepted as business as usual.
