This book provides a critical history of the movement associatedwith the journal Annales, from its foundation in 1929 to thepresent. This movement has been the single most important force inthe development of what is sometimes called ?the newhistory?. Renowned cultural historian, Peter Burke, distinguishes betweenfour main generations in the development of the Annales School. Thefirst generation included Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch, who foughtagainst the old historical establishment and founded the journalAnnales to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. The secondgeneration was dominated by Fernand Braudel, whose magnificent workon the Mediterranean has become a modern classic. The thirdgeneration, deeply associated with the ?cultural turn?in historical scholarship, includes recently well-known historianssuch as Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Jacques Le Goff and Georges Duby. This new edition brings us right up to the present, andcontemplates the work of a fourth generation, includingpractitioners such as Roger Chartier, Serge Gruzinski and JacquesRevel. This new generation continued much of the cultural focus ofthe previous Annales historians, while diversifying further, andbecoming increasingly ?reflexive?, a move that owesmuch to the sociocultural theories of Michel Foucault, Michel deCerteau and Pierre Bourdieu. Wide-ranging yet concise, this new edition of a classic work ofanalysis of one of the most important historical movements of thetwentieth century will be welcomed by students of history and othersocial sciences and by the interested general reader.… (plus d'informations)

An extremely brief introduction to the Annales school of history. A nice overview, but not terribly analytical. Probably best used to get a sense of who some of the key Annales figures were/are.

Burke ger här en kort introduktion till Annalesskolan. Dess uppkomst, "medlemmar", inflytande och tankar presenteras översiktligt. ( )
