I enjoyed this visit with the well grounded Barnaby. I liked the easy way that he and Liam interacted. A story that is Barnaby and Liam's alone would be great. ( )

A ghost walk at a local park, complete with digital recorders in case of any supernatural activity, sounds like a fun thing to do on Halloween. It may not be everybody's thing, and Barnaby is careful about not assuming Liam, a man he's recently met, might be interested. But Liam is not to be denied and when he turns up at their friends' house, there is no stopping him. I really liked that such a seemingly innocent activity as going "ghost hunting" brings Barnaby and Liam closer together and Barnaby gets some closure he's been wanting for a long time.

Barnaby is a man firmly grounded in reality. He's an archaeologist, like his deceased parents, and slightly obsessed with the past, but he looks for facts and doesn’t believe in an afterlife. Interestingly, as the evening progresses, it emerges that he would like to believe. He wishes the legends about the "veil between the worlds" being thinnest on Samhain, or Halloween, were true. So when he thinks he hears his name, he runs off into the darkness to find out what is going on.

Liam is a great guy and very interested in Barnaby. Going ghost hunting doesn't faze him, but when Barnaby vanishes into the night, Liam is worried. Luckily he finds him soon and takes him home for some shared hot chocolate and a heart-to-heart that explains many of Barnaby's beliefs and idiosyncrasies. They get a lot closer that evening and it looks to me as if they might now both get why they are meant to be together.

If you like slightly spooky Halloween stories with a hint of mystery left at the end of it, if you enjoy reading about new lovers getting to know each other during a small crisis, and if you’re looking for a Halloween story with heart, then give this one a try. You might end up liking it as much as I did.
