Interesting short study of the concept of swarming with 10 case studies from Alexander in Sogdia to Black Hawk Down (these case studies are very light). However the author remains disciplined in using the same 5 or 6 questions in analysing each case study. The selection is also good, with a measured mix of swarmer vs non-swarmer and successful vs unsuccessful swarmer.

The main part looks at how those principles could work for a future army. Linking current discussions on dispersal, networking and autonomy for small units with an appraisal of how rapid technological innovation (in seeing, tracking and killing targets) may force a new organisation and a new doctrine on the US Army.
The challenges of creating this new army aren't played down but neither are they examined in detail, so its difficult to see this as anything other than a preliminary, if useful, study. ( )
