What's one little bee to do when a big hungry bear wants its honey? The rhyming story is a sweet treat for little ones. I particularly enjoyed the final, wordless spread.

One rhyming pair was a bit awkward (bees/weeds) and a comma here and there when phrases were grouped together (as opposed to being separated on the page) would have helped. But your little one certainly won't notice these little things.

The illustrations by James Scott are delightful and you'll discover some new hidden treasure every time you read the book. My infant granddaughters were mesmerized by the colors, especially the golden honey hue.

This book would be good for primary students. This book is "A bear, a bee, and a honey tree" written by Daniel Bergstrom, illustrated by Brandon James Scott, and published in 2022. This book is about a bear trying to get honey from a bee hive. It tells about the battle between the bees trying to protect their home and the bear trying to get some food. In the end, the bees win and the bear is hungry. I would use this in my classroom to teach about adjectives and how to use them to make a story more interesting. This is a very funny, good book for kids to read on their own time as well.

First sentence: A bear, a bee...

Premise/plot: Tale as old as time. A bear wants honey. A bee [and all the bees from the hive] want to keep the bear from getting honey. This one features very few words. Maybe one or two words per spread. Maybe. The story is told through illustrations.

My thoughts: The story is predictable, familiar. The text is incredibly simple. The illustrations are charming/delightful. If you love the illustrations you are a thousand times more likely to like the book overall. The text in and of itself might not be enough to "wow" you. Still, this one would be easy for little ones to learn to "read" on their own. Just a few times through with an adult [parent, grandparent, etc] and they may just pick it up enough to "read" or read all on their own. Plus, since the illustrations do all the heavy-lifting, little ones can read the illustrations all on their own. It's important to have books this simple. ( )

There are some picture books that are just masterworks of illustration. There is not a single page within this book that I wouldn’t hang up on my wall as art. It has that soft cloud like a happy feeling that makes the reader want to keep turning the page. The story itself is very simple and uses the same words repetitively making it easier to read, but at the same time, more fun in story time. A bee, a bear, a Honey tree, a bear, a tree, a bee, you get the idea. I want to add this to my permanent story time collection as something that would get used over and over again. ( )
