This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I think reading at least the first book in the series would help a person understand the paranormal setting that surrounds Animals. I’ve read a couple other stories set in this series and I was hoping that the authors would explain a little more about Animals and about Karma, but there was nothing new. The setting is great, but I think the series would benefit with a more expanded explanation of the universe it’s in.
The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot so I’ll only add a little to it. The book is about Pierre trying to get Cooper to trust him that they are mates, and for Cooper to work past the insecurity of his childhood about being a foster kid and what happened during that time. Cooper also needs to learn how to trust his cougar, especially when Cooper’s been suppressing the shifter side all his life.
The authors did a better job of making Cooper’s and Pierre’s voices distinct. They haven’t done that with other characters in others books I’ve read by them, but this time they did. Pierre is a wolf shifter, and a widower who has a young son, Andre. The son acts much older and wiser than his young age. Thankfully, Andre wasn’t annoying. The authors usually do a good job with kids in their stories. Since Pierre is in tune with his wolf, he knows what is happening as soon as he meets Cooper, but Pierre is surprised that he’d find another mate after losing his first one. Pierre also has to adapt to the fact that Cooper raised as a human, expects to go on dates. Cooper is slowly adjusting to his life at Animals among other shifters but he still thinks like a human. When he meets Pierre and his cougar says, ‘Mate,’ Cooper freaks. Cooper has to learn about what all this ‘mate’ stuff means. Pierre is much older than Cooper, he’s calm and patient. Cooper sometimes freaks easily. He’s definitely insecure about his place as a shifter because he believes he’s ‘too human’. Pierre calls Cooper ‘strong’, but I never got that impression. He adapts to life around him in order to survive, but runs when people or situations make him anxious.
The book I read was an ARC, so I’m hoping that the betas, proofers and editors made a thorough going over of the writing before releasing the story, because there were a lot more errors in this book than in the other ARCs I’ve read from this writing team. At the beginning there were more instances of sentences that seemed incomplete, like thought processes ended before completing a sentence. Also segues to next paragraphs didn’t always read smoothly. There were places that obviously had missing words throughout the book and if I’m remembering correctly, an inconsistency about Cooper’s young life near the end of the book. I won’t rate about the technical details since I don’t know if they were fixed or not.
I enjoyed the characters, but feel that too much was centered around Andre. Like he carried the story more than Pierre and Cooper. It felt like events and conversations centered around Andre a third to half of the time. When I read M/M, even if an mpreg story, I don’t want the story too focused on the kids, and I felt like this time it was. I would have also liked to have learned more about the paranormal world of Animals and about Karma. Cooper lives there, he’s surrounded by shifters and sadly there weren’t more hints or tidbits about that world to make the story more interesting.
I give A Family for Cooper, 3 Stars. I like the main characters, but think there’s too much of Andre, and not enough about Pierre’s business. Also, not enough world building when it comes to the paranormal world the authors created. The story is disappointing in that area. Hopefully the authors will get better at expanding on the world as the series progresses.
