Monique is a preacher's daughter who detests the impossible rules of her religion. Everyone expects her to wait until marriage, so she has no one to turn to when she discovers that she physically can't have sex.

After two years of trying and failing, her boyfriend breaks up with her. To win him back, Monique teams up with straight-laced church girl Sasha—who is surprisingly knowledgeable about Monique's condition—as well as Reggie, the misunderstood bad boy who always makes a ruckus at church, and together they embark upon a top-secret search for the cure.

While on their quest, Monique discovers the value of a true friend and the wonders of a love that accepts her for who she is. Despite everyone's opinions about her virtue, she learns to live for herself, inspiring us all to reclaim our bodies and unapologetically love ourselves.

"A triumph in not just dynamite contemporary fiction but also in critiquing purity culture and the harm it can do." —Buzzfeed

"[Monique's] journey toward recognizing her own value is hard-won, and her awareness of her own worth, when it comes, feels like a true victory. An empowering read." —Booklist

This book was so enjoyable and I didn't want it to end ( )

The deeper I got into this book, the more I realized how many of the characters were wearing some sort of disguise. Some doing so deliberately, others doing so unconsciously. Monique is bound and determined she's going to have sex with Dom, but her body refuses to cooperate, not once, but multiple times over a two year period. She sees Dom as her perfect future husband until he breaks things off after their latest attempt ends in failure. It's important to mention her father is a preacher and thinks Dom can do no wrong. Then there's Sasha, the girl everyone points to as being perfect, from song to prayer. Reggie is Monique's fathers latest reclamation project who everyone believes is the ultimate incorrigible.
When Monique tries to get seen at a women's health clinic, she's shocked to find that 'perfect' Sasha volunteers there. Instead of the derision and ridicule Monique expects, Sasha is quite supportive and empathetic, not to mention very pragmatic. This realization leads to a wild night where they, plus Reggie, go on a madcap quest to buy an item that might help Monique solve her problem, the one preventing her from having sex. That night is also the beginning of her realization regarding exactly who everyone in her life really is and how much fun she's missed in her life. Following that growing awareness is affirming and satisfying. This is another excellent choice for school and public libraries because it addresses self-image, peer pressure, a medical condition girls may have, but never heard of, and plenty of funny moments.
