noun: a substance that speeds up a reaction without itself changing

When Najwa Bakri walks into her first Scrabble competition since her best friend's death, it's with the intention to heal and move on with her life. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea to choose the very same competition where said best friend, Trina Low, died. It seems that even though Najwa is trying to change, she's not ready to give up Trina just yet.

But the same can't be said for all the other competitors. With Trina, the Scrabble Queen herself, gone, the throne is empty, and her friends are eager to be the next reigning champion. All's fair in love and Scrabble, but all bets are off when Trina's formerly inactive Instagram starts posting again, with cryptic messages suggesting that maybe Trina's death wasn't as straightforward as everyone thought. And maybe someone at the competition had something to do with it.

As secrets are revealed and the true colors of her friends are shown, it's up to Najwa to find out who's behind these mysterious postsâ??not just to save Trina's memory, but to save herse

This was a BookPage recommendation. I think I'm in awe of the vocabulary of competitive Scrabble players and Spelling Bee participants.

This is set in Malaysia and seems to involve teenagers competing in a Scrabble tournament one year after the death of one of their own. Mystery ensues when the dead girl's social media starts posting again. A former best friend and former boyfriend team up to try to solve the mystery. ( )

Najwa walks into her first Scrabble tournament a year after her best friend died at the game table. She's determined to reconnect with her love of the game despite the stares and whispers. Trina was the scrabble community's "it girl" who was the Queen of the Tiles. Now others are jockeying for that position. As secrets are revealed and Najwa tries to investigate and uncover the truth, it's unclear who she can trust and if she can keep it together to win the competition. Each chapter starts with a word and Scrabble score. Najwa is smart, determined, and grieving. ( )

A year after her BFF, Trina Low, died during a championship Scrabble game, Najwa Bakri is ready to enter a Scrabble tournament again. But there is a rumour flying round the competitors: was Trina murdered?

This was an intriguing mystery though there were times when I wondered whether the characters really were talking like 15 and 16 year olds when discussing their relationships. Also, according to the story's timeline Trina died in November 2021 but a lot of the characters seemed to have been familiar with each other from tournaments for quite some time before that, which seems unlikely. I really enjoyed this! I thought the prose was great, and the protagonist and setting were interesting. I loved the ending, which managed to be both surprising and obvious in hindsight. There were some issues with the pacing, but overall, I would recommend to any YA fan, or word nerd. ( )
