Not your typical story about an American abroad. Instead, Marcie Maxfield pulls back the curtain on the globe-trotting world of an expat wife to explore issues of marriage and compromise. Moving backward and forward--both in time and between cities and countries--Em's Awful Good Fortune is woven together thematically by bits and pieces of Em's life: love, loss and betrayal, sexual assault and the lasting impact of PTSD. A voice-driven narrative that is raw, comic, and authentic, this is true to life, a disorderly journey--one that ultimately arrives at a new understanding of self-love and the complexity of relationships.… (plus d'informations)

This book was a joy to read because I was able to learn something new! Em is a tag-along wife and an ex-pat. She details her struggles as a wife and mother chasing after her husband’s dreams living abroad, while negating her own.
Her story is packed full of humorous moments that shed light to the loneliness, fear, constantly trying to fit in and being a loyal wife in a variety of different cultures.

Gabra Zackman did a great job narrating Em and all her baggage.

I just finished Em's Awful Good Fortune and I loved it! I enjoyed the narrator’s sharp wit, and even though I’ve never been a tagalong, I related to many of her challenges. Her struggles with identity and career resonated too. I appreciated the Michigan references and the cultural/political observations/snarks. ( )

I have heard the words "tagalong wife" before a couple of times. This book really portrays the meaning of it. Depending on the situation of the relationship; it can either be a good or bad thing. In Em's case, it was a bad thing. The disconnect between Em and Gee was uncomfortable. Yet, a real part of a relationship.

I get where Em did not really feel like she had a voice to speak up but on the other hand; I really found myself yelling at Em to speak up and stand up for herself.

This is a quick read. I did like all the traveling to the various locations. I definitely felt like a jet setter. Yet, I did struggle with the emotional connection with the characters but this does not mean another reader won't connect better to this book. So do give it a try. ( )
