When your soul mate is the man you loathed at first sight?Book Two in Sarah Ready's Soul Mates in Romeo series sparkles with tension and a delicious helping of swoon-worthy romance.Veronica Diaz loves her career, her friends and the great outdoors - she has no room in her life for men. In fact, she knows there are only two types of men in the world: players and wanna-be players and she wants nothing to do with any of them.So when a psychic informs Veronica that her fated soul mate is Frederick Knight "The King of Players," Veronica does what any sensible woman would do - she runs. A twist of fate lands Veronica in the depths of a pitch-black cave system with a man she's never met and can't see. As Veronica and Sam struggle to survive they open up, share their secrets, and risk their lives for each other. Soon Veronica starts to wonder if maybe not all men are players, and maybe she can trust Sam enough to fall in love. The only problem: Sam is actually Frederick Knight. The man Veronica swore she'd never, ever, ever love. In fact, she loathed him at first sight. And if they make it out of the cave alive, and Veronica sees him for the first time, she'll loathe him again. Won't she?But maybe, sometimes you can only see who someone really is when you can't see them at all? And maybe you can only fall in love when it's not at first sight?"This will easily and unequivocally be one of your top reads this year." I adored the first book in this series, Chasing Romeo, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book about Veronica, Chloe from the first book’s best friend. Each book stands completely alone but you’ll definitely want to check out Chasing Romeo at some point as it’s an absolute hoot! And this book is just as much of a delight!
Psychic octogenarian, Aunt Erma, has never been wrong with her love predictions but Veronica refuses to believe that odious billionaire playboy, Frederick Knight, is her soulmate. She’s more of a free spirit, nature loving, kick-ass kind of gal as opposed to his high-living, highfalutin lifestyle. I liked her immensely - it was hard not to. She was a strong woman who owned her personality and knew what she did and didn’t want out of life. But the fact she was able and willing to grow was really wonderful.
Sam, too, was a great character. He was coming back to himself after 5 years of getting over a betrayal by living up to the stereotypical playboy lifestyle. But at heart he was always a bit of a computer nerd. He was also empathetic and super sweet when it came to Veronica. I do question how a bona fide introvert would be able to live an extrovert lifestyle for 5 whole years - I’m exhausted at even the mere thought - but it didn’t put me off him.
Despite their relatively short time together, Veronica and Sam’s love felt real and honest but definitely heightened by their situation in the cave. I loved their connection and loved that the pair fell for each other despite never having seen what the other looked like. And all the “I see you” stuff - that gave me all the true romance vibes.
I know from Chasing Romeo that Sarah Ready is an excellent writer but this book just confirmed that for me. She does smart, funny and sexy so damn well. She also writes incredibly realistically. I got a wee bit anxious when she was describing the cave scenes which just shows how talented she is. (It’s not too scary / claustrophobia inducing, so fear not!)
I would now definitely class myself as a fan of Sarah Ready, her stories and her writing and I can’t wait to read more in this series. And I might just have to do backlist buy and binge of Sarah Ready very soon. But this book was a delight from start to finish. There was action, adventure, jeopardy, sex and romance. If that’s not the perfect blend for a romcom then I don’t know what is. 5 stars for this one and definitely recommended. (
