[3.75] Harris has written an enlightening and thought-provoking book that explores our healthcare system through the eyes of a Black mother whose son is battling a mysterious illness. She skillfully captures the anger and frustration that virtually all of us would experience if we were forced to grapple with the unknown. What’s more, Harris had to confront this crisis while also dealing with her own anxiety and depression. I do think some sections lacked continuity. Also, the strong religious overtones might cause relatability challenges for readers who are not overly religious. That being said, “This Boy We Made” offers interesting perspectives on a range of issues, including our medical system, genetics and racism. ( ) When I checked out this book, I thought it would focus on the child's illness, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Then talk about how he is today. It did discuss those topics; however, it jumped around from the author's marriage, how she met her spouse, and racial issues. I was losing interest fast. I did finish the book, but I would not recommend it to anyone. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

One morning, Tophs, Taylor Harris's round-cheeked, lively twenty-two-month-old, wakes up listless and unresponsive. At the hospital, her maternal instincts are confirmed: something is wrong with her boy, and Taylor's life will never be the same. With every question the doctors answer about Tophs's increasingly troubling symptoms, more arise, and Taylor dives into the search for a diagnosis. This is a stirring and radiantly written examination of the bond between mother and child, full of hard-won insights about fighting for and finding meaning when nothing goes as expected.
