It's only fair to acknowledge it's no longer 2006 and this just isn't for me. Even worse, it's so nearly for me that it's so much less for me.

It's an interesting question that other things, including Neil Gaiman's American God's answers better, but there are definitely some cool concepts and swings here, but it's all a bit incel hipster Constantine who's the lovechild of Stewart Lee and Mark LeMarr with very little self awareness in a nightmare High Fidelity.

I'm the right age for the references and I was/ am into a whole lot of the things referenced, but not in a way that this does anything for me. I'm also the wrong gender and sexuality to not find the trying to do a send up of the thing by having a protagonist who does the thing without engaging with it, so it's just doing the thing.

I get that they set the guy up as being the worst, but he's not really treated like that and saves the day like any other comic character, so it falls flat in celebrating an awful person with about as much self-awareness and lack or telegraphing it as Rick and Morty.

Maybe I'm missing something about it being so on the nose and exercise in epic cringelord hipster dudes rockness actually being good and clever, but it was just pretentious, annoying, and problematic for me. ( )

I just hated the main character to the point that trying to read the last few issues were torture so I stopped. ( )

Not quite what I expected. Enjoyable and I don't regret it, but I'm not sure I got much out of the reading. Isn't staying with me the way that The Wicked & the Divine has. ( )

Om man efter att ha läst den utmärkta The wicked+the divine vill söka sig bakåt i firma Gillen & McKelvies produktion kommer man snabbt till Phonogram. Om det man mer än något annat vill ha är estetiken (och ordvitsarna) men också referenser till popmusik från i huvudsak nittio- och tidigt nollnoll-tal så är detta helt rätt.

Rue Britannia handlar om David Kohl, musikmagiker och rövhatt. Han råkar tidigt på musikens gudinna, som vill att han skall undersöka varför någon håller på och bråkar med hennes inkarnation Britannia, vid tillfället död sedan tio år. David har förrått och i någon mån övergett henne, men har också sin identitet rotad i hennes musik, och när folk bråkar med minnet av henne påverkar det honom.

Mytologin här är rörig: dels för att den aldrig riktigt förklaras, dels för att den till stora delar bygger på musikscenen i Storbritannien på nittiotalet. Det finns en ordlista på slutet, men eftersom serier är ett visuellt medium räcker den långt ifrån till för att förklara allt (och eftersom den är på slutet får man syn på den först när det är för sent).

Rue Britannia är ett avslutat helt, så om man är osäker på om den utsökta stilen i ord och bild är tillräckligt för att kompensera för att vissa saker möjligen kommer flyga en helt över huvudet, så behöver man inte oroa sig över att behöva läsa de två senare samlingarna. Bäst är det förmodligen om man har precis rätt musiksmak, men även annars är det värt att läsa. Och man kan om man vill få lite utmärkta tips om musik att lyssna på. ( )
