Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Immensely gripping...Stayed up till past 2am to finish this' Sophie Hannah Four people walked into the dining room that night. One would never leave. Matthew: the perfect husband. Titus: the perfect son. Charlie: the perfect illusion. Rachel: the perfect stranger. Charlie didn't want her at the book club. Matthew wouldn't listen. And that's how Charlie finds himself slumped beside his husband's body, their son sitting silently at the dinner table, while Rachel calls 999, the bloody knife still gripped in her hand. Classic crime meets Donna Tartt in this nerve-shredding domestic noir thriller that weaves a sprawling web of secrets around an opulent West London world and the dinner that ends in death. The Dinner Guest by B P Walter

I have been hearing about this book from all over the web for a while. The hype was definitely present, the summary spread around so much you likely know the plot. Sounds promising, massive potential within the plot however as much as I WANTED to love this book it fell well below my expectations.

The first half of the book dragged on told in a somewhat meager narrative tone. The book bounces you between people and back and forth in time with no real change in the tone as one would expect when a different character is telling it.

At first I loved the dynamics of Charlie, Matthew, and Titus but the more the book dragged on the more boring and unreal they seemed. All of the characters were underdeveloped and I failed to connect emotionally with any of them for longer than a couple pages.

I will admit towards the end things got much better, but the painful journey to get there is not worth it.

Thank you to netgalley and publishers for providing me with a copy and allowing me to share my honest opinion. I wish I could rave about this one but it just was not anything I'd be willing to read again. I likely would have given up had I not agreed to review ( )

This one kept me guessing to the end, but the end was a bit 'he-said/she-said' and Rachel's motivation for confessing to the murder (this is not a spoiler!) didn't make sense to me.

There were a surprising number of typos/editing errors too. ( )

Loved it! The way this novel builds up on the dreading sense that something ominous is waiting for us around the corner is spot on!
Matthew, Charlie and Titus lead quite a content life and have the usual problems most families face; but all in all, they are a happy family of three.
Then Rachel comes along. Who is Rachel? Why is Charlie so unnerved by her? Why is she so interested in Titus and why does she seem to be everywhere all of a sudden?
With hints of Herman Koch’s vibe, this novel is not to be missed. Too good. ( )
