Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:Renowned author Joseph Bruchac tells a powerful story of a girl who learns more about her Penacook heritage while sheltering in place with her grandparents during the coronavirus pandemic.
Malian loves spending time with her grandparents at their home on a Wabanaki reservationâ??sheâ??s there for a visit when, suddenly, all travel shuts down. Thereâ??s a new virus making people sick, and Malian will have to stay with her grandparents for the duration.
Everyone is worried about the pandemic, but Malian knows how to keep her family safe: She protects her grandparents, and they protect her. She doesnâ??t go out to play with friends, she helps her grandparents use video chat, and she listens to and learns from their stories. And when Malsum, one of the dogs living on the rez, shows up at their door, Malianâ??s family knows that heâ??ll protect them too.
Told in verse inspired by oral storytelling, this novel about the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the ways in which Indigenous nations and communities cared for one another through plagues of the past, and how they keep caring for one another today.

Gr 3–8—While her parents are sheltering in place in Boston, Malian, an eighth grade Penacook girl, tries to keep
herself and her grandparents safe from COVID-19 on their reservation. In this novel in verse, Bruchac takes a look
at life in lockdown through the eyes of a girl coping with boredom, isolation, and the need to find her place. The text
addresses residential schools, relocation, and forced sterilization, as well as racial justice and the disproportionate
way that COVID-19 spread in marginalized communities.

Rez Dogs by Joseph Bruchac is a wonderful story, told in open verse like an oral story, about a Penacook girl at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. She gets stuck with her grandparents during the lockdown and learns more than she ever could imagine from her elders! And as she guards her grandparents, she is guarded by a dog who mysteriously arrived just when he knew he was needed. There are stories within the story: old stories of animals and ancestors, and newer stories about her life, and the lives of her parents and grandparents. Rez Dogs is a beautiful story about self-discovery, heritage and family, and friendship with man's best friend. A touching tale of resilience and history and love. ( )

It feels so strange to be reading a book set during the time of COVID already, but I am glad that authors are starting to explore this time and it’s effect on different people. This book in particular shows the important viewpoint of how Native Americans have been effected, and in particular on reservations. This is a novel in verse and is beautifully done.

I also loved the dog that shows up and stays with the main character as she must stay with her grandparents on their reservation during a COVID lockdown. He helps looking after them all, as Malian bravely watches over and protects her grandparents who would be particularly susceptible to COVID. ( )

Rez Dogs is one of those books that seem like a quick read for a lazy day, and it is. However, this book is so much more. We meet a young girl named Malian who is visiting her Penacook grandparents on the reservation when all travel is shut down due to Covid-19. Her parents are in Boston. She continues her school lessons online, helps her grandparents use video chat all while learning more about her own heritage. She wakes one morning to find a dog sitting in the driveway, as if guarding her and her grandparents. She names him Malsum.

Through the stories her grandparents tell her, she learns about her Native American heritage as well as life lessons. She learns of the atrocities from the past as well as the good that has come out of them. This is a simple, quick read, so full of simple, and in my opinion, great life lessons all children and adults should hear. This is just another great book by an author I really admire. ( )
