Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. Rachel Fordham wins again! This beautifully researched historical tale was exactly what I wanted. I loved the characters and their “realness.” Their interactions were fantastic and really drove the story. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is the 4th Rachel Fordham book I've read, and I really enjoyed it! Each of her books has so much historic detail, and I learn something each time. The details about dentistry back in the late 1800s, and about reformatories was very interesting, but the interaction of the characters is what drives the story. Fordham creates very 'real' characters, and has unique plot lines. Twists and turns in the story as Rachel tries to clear her name, the developing romance, and learning forgiveness are all parts of the story. This is another story that you will ponder on after you've read it! ('Yours Truly Thomas' was another exceptional book that I think about when anything about 'dead letters' comes up. Unique story line there , too!) Accused of a crime she did not commit, Hazel finds herself in a New York State Reformatory. Upon her release, she attempts to find work and move on with her life. She finds a job working as a lady in attendance for a dentist. Eventually, trust wins out over fear, and she discloses to Gilbert about her past. Filled with plot twists and interesting characters, this book kept my interest until the very last page. I have to say I enjoyed the journey Hazel and Gilbert found themself taking. This book explores forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation that ultimately moved me throughout the pages. I enjoyed everything about this book. It illustrates how sometimes we need someone to believe in us and accept us along with our past before we can do it ourselves. So check out this book for yourself. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but it in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Five years in a New York state reformatory have left a blemish on Hazel's real name. So when she takes a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts's lady in attendance in 1898, she does so under an alias. In the presence of her quiet and pious employer, Hazel finds more than an income. She finds a friend and a hope that if she can set her tarnished past in order, she might have a future after all. As Gilbert becomes accustomed to the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, he can't help but sense something secretive about her. Perhaps there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Can the questions that loom between them ever be answered? Or will the deeds of days gone by forever rob the future of its possibilities? Rachel Fordham pens a tender tale of a soft-spoken man, a hardened woman, and the friends that stand by them as they work toward a common purpose-to expunge the record of someone society deemed beyond saving-and perhaps find love along the way.
