In the immense city of Varangantua, life is cheap but mistakes are expensive. When Probator Agusto Zidarov of the city's enforcers is charged with locating the missing scion of a wealthy family, he knows full well that the chances of finding him alive are slight. The people demanding answers, though, are powerful and ruthless, and he is soon immersed in a world of criminal cartels and corporate warfare where even an enforcer's survival is far from guaranteed. I'm reading/ listening to a lot of books at the moment, including a bunch of Warhammer stuff of varying quality, and my quality threshold isn't ridiculous, but this was unlistenable. This isn't because the writing is the worst Black Library offering or it's offensive (aside from the 'good cop' BS - ACAB), but my brain was just sliding off from this generic detective fiction that is serviceable, but completely uninspired with a little sprinkling of 40K flavour on top.
I see so many positive reviews, so your mileage certainly may vary, but I am really not having a good time with these new 'genre' books from Black Library (Horror, Crime, etc.). There have always been books of all manner of genre set in various Warhammer settings without the need for these categories. I just don't get it.
I hate being negative and I really tried, but I finally gave up halfway through after wanting to for a long time.
The narration perfectly fits the book in terms of quality. It's serviceable, but not good. ( )
