Teamwork and friendship go hand in hand in this book. The two friends are faced with a problem and must work together to find a solution. Celestine is the thinker in the story, while Ernest is the lovable easy going friend. He might not be as innovative as Celestine but still comes through by participating in her plans. ( )

(easy) Celestine and Ernest are a poor little mouse and bear living together in a home with a leaky roof. It seems to be insinuated that they are father and child(daughter). Ernest is worried as to where they will get the money to fix the roof. In the eternal optimism present in a child, Celestine insists that Ernest take to the streets as a violinist to make some money. The first day it doesn't work, but when Celestine chimes in with her sweet little song voice and the two believe in each other, they rack it in! I don't know whether it was the story line or the innocent illustrations, but the feeling that pervades for me when reading this story is the strong love connection between Ernest and Celestine. They are each other's world and that is all they need. They truly depend on each other and see each other as equal participants in their poverty. As long as they work together they will be happy and work it out to survive. This story would be a good avenue to teach determination and faith. ( )
