An action adventure like Indiana Jones, a science adventure like Jurassic Park and a human feel-good story like Slumdog Millionaire. Masters of the Broken Watches is a must-read. Sebastian Miles and his team of marine biologists stare at their watches. Time outside their lab has jumped forward by twenty-two hours. Minutes before this illogical space-time event, they were analyzing a mysterious glowing nodule extracted from an unknown marine specimen. News of this marine life reaches powerful governments, inadvertently triggering a race to hunt, capture and control it. But these governments and their nationalist leaders have never faced a team of motivated scientists. They have no idea to what lengths Sebastian and his Paramarines will go in order to protect the species from capture and exploitation. The first of a multi-book series, this genre-bending novel leaves readers on the edge of their seats. Thrilling like Blake Crouch and science-driven like Ted Chang, all approached in ways you've never seen before. A captivating adventure, a heartbreaking story of love, and a true display of human ingenuity and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.… (plus d'informations)

When a humble, lowly Vietnamese fishermen catches a strange fish in dangerous waters, he knows it is something special. Once Sebastian Miles, an adventurous scientist, gets a hold of it, his mind is blown. This fish isn't just special. It is beyond that. It has the capabilities to control time itself. Miles must go on a life altering adventure to study this phenomenon and keep it out of the hands of those who wish to abuse it. Fighting for his life alongside his team of Paramarines, Miles will see just how far they will go to protect it.

This phenomenal novel falls in the science fiction category, but there is a lot more to it than that. It contains folklore, clean romance, action, and heart tugging moments. Real experiments are coupled well with myth and cryptozoology. Multiple view points, which may be confusing at first, seamlessly blend together as the story progresses. Sebastian Miles and the team of Paramarines fight not for what is most financially beneficial, but for what is truly right. It is a story full of suspense and compassion, fought for by a whole team of likeable characters. It is a fast paced and addicting sci-fi adventure!

One critique I have is the ending went by really quickly. I would have liked the build up of the previous chapters to expand into an action packed ending with more details on the team's work and global ramifications. I would also have liked to see more personality traits and backgrounds on the main characters. Getting to know them better would add more depth to the story. Regardless, I really enjoyed this book. This is one novel I know would make a fantastic TV series.

I put this book down about 50% of the way through. The writing style just wasn't working for me. It definitely felt like there was some scientific research/background - at least to someone with only the most basic knowledge - but it didn't translate in an interesting way. The main character sized up every other character as soon as they came on the page and the constant interruptions to learn how tall someone was, their hair and eye color, and if they were a woman, how attractive they were, was tedious and took me out of the story. I didn't feel anything about any of the characters because none of them had any depth. Even the science had my eyes glazing over because it was somewhat complex, but any time something happened plot-wise, one of the characters was sure to reiterate everything to the rest of the group, so it was both confusing and repetitive. Unfortunately this just isn't one I can recommend. ( )
