What a surprising, good read! I thought it looked interesting when I found it on a buying spree at a used-book store (they have a great fantasy section) and was the first on the stack that I read. It is a post-apocalyptic book written in the late 70's that starts with the protagonists' stories, then by half-way through a Neuroman explains how it all happens. And Kahn does explain his new world well: squirrels as food for the humans are hard to come by, and in this new world vampires are allied with griffins and Accidents to wipe out the remaining humans. There is talk about the Ice, and the Neuroman (woman) explains that everything" started to fall apart in 1986.

I really recommend getting one's hand on a copy of this book. There are parts where it drags, a bit reminiscent of "look at this cool place!" that authors tend to use when they need to pad a book, but the depth of it is in the self-doubt that occurs when the protagonist Centaur finds out that his kind did not come from a far-distant island, but were, rather, the invention of human genetic tinkering." A rip roaring post-holocaust adventure story of some characters that set out on a quest in a future California. Fantasy characters are genetically engineered and humans are mostly the bad guys. ( )

Questo è in realtà un romanzo più che altro fantasy, atipico e surreale, ambientato in un futuro non troppo remoto sconvolto da una serie di "apocalissi" sia naturali che causate dall'uomo, pieno di mostri e stranezze.
Una storia di caccia e ricerca, di vendetta e amicizia, di amore e dolore, il tutto sotto l'impronta della gran fantasia dell'autore che tra un'avventura ed un'altra dimostra una bella capacità di scrittura. Un romanzo originale, intrigante e curioso, avvincente ma leggerino. ( )
