The style of this book just may not be for me, but I had a couple of big problems with it. The biggest of which is the dialogue- every character seems to speak the same way as the protagonist’s inner dialogue, which means mostly in metaphors and extensions of the protagonist’s own thoughts. I understand that this book is centered on the protagonist reflecting on who she really is and what she wants or doesn’t want out of life, so this is almost definitely done purposely for the introspective tone- but that doesn’t make me like it. This book feels almost poetic and I’ve never been a fan of poetry, so it simply isn’t for me. Would recommend for people who enjoy living in a character’s head, nearly-Lynchian vignettes, and not being able to tell what did or didn’t really happen in the story. ( ) What a slog. There were three or four fairly brief sections that I thought were really good but then there was the rest of it. Those three or four sections got the extra star. I'm perfectly willing to admit it's a "it's not you it's me" type thing. This is written as a steam of conciousness and that's not really my thing. *slight spoilers* I was intrigued by this book - it's moody and different, with a magical realism aspect that I was looking forward to exploring. Unfortunately, I discovered at about 14% that this one's not for me. In the last three pages I read, it referenced gay male sex, vulgar descriptions of female to male oral sex, as well as abortion. It's like it was going out of it's way to ask me to put it down. Talented writer, but the gritty factor they're going for was not edgy to me, but just gross. Too each their own. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
