Who would think that an English country flower show would become a double murder crime scene? It turns out that the annual flower show in the Cotswold village of Caulcott Green is a flashpoint for the feuds, petty jealousies and conflicts swirling in the village. Chief Inspector Jason Dury is called upon to investigate the murders, and brings with him his trusty sergeant, Flora Glenn, who is slightly in love with him. A vicar's wife (and amateur sleuth), Monica Noble is also on the scene to chase down the numerous red herrings that crop up. At the same time, Monica needs to keep tabs on her teenage daughter who has dreams of becoming a fashion model. In a comic side story, this daughter pursues a celebrity photographer around the flower show, much to the chagrin of his wife. This a light whodunnit murder mystery with an attractive cast of characters in a pleasant English country setting. In the cast there's a member of the landed gentry, an obnoxious self-made business tycoon, his trophy wife, a nerdy scientist, a knighted army veteran and a variety of other locals. All told, there's plenty of potential suspects. Monica is an attractive amateur detective, whom DCI Dury describes as a "natural detective", despite her getting in the way of his investigation. She however manages to figure out the identity of the killer in a couple of hours. Recommended as a breezy and entertaining read. I received an advance reader's copy of the eBook from Joffe Press, via Netgalley. The comments are my own. cosy-mystery, england, law-enforcement, murder-investigation, small-town The beginning appeared kind of slow with all of the characters and their motives for murder, but when the death occurs it becomes essential to keep it all in mind. The whole thing is diabolical and filled with twists and red herrings along with a few situational humorous bits for variety. No spoilers, and the publisher's blurb gives hints. Loved it!
