I know it's about learning to fly and not being afraid. But the whole book felt rather harsh to me.

One of the things I love best about being a librarian is learning from other librarians. A colleague of mine read this book at our mock Caldecott program. And she brought it to life! I saw it in a way I never quite anticipated. I still don't know if I will ever return to it again. BUT I do think it is better than I first thought ( )

This wordless picture book would be a great fit for primary grade students. It is a sweet story about a baby bird who is afraid to learn to fly. His mother tries to encourage him but he comes up with many alternative ways he could make it south for the winter instead of learning to fly. This book is a fun and easy read (as it's wordless) and would be a great book for a science introduction about bird migration. ( )

I found this one to be a bit hard to follow. I sometimes had to flip back a page to figure out what was going on. Overall, it's a story about a baby bird that doesn't want to leave the nest, while its parent is trying to convince it to give flying a shot. Since I had some trouble following it, I think little kids might also struggle without some explanation to go along with it. Pretty cute, but could have had more illustrations to better explain what was happening. ( )

In this wordless book, a robin tries to get her chick to fly by explaining how flight is necessary to get food, migrate, and avoid predators. But the chick seems to have an answer for everything and why it doesn't need to fly at all.

While I like the idea of wordless book in general, this one didn't quite do it for me. (My 9-year-old niece who also likes wordless books said she didn't like this one, and she enjoys almost every book she's ever read.) If a book needs dialogue bubbles to tell its story, I kind of feel like it needs dialogue then and not just pictures filled in those conversation bubbles.

That being said, I could see this title having an audience, especially in a classroom or home that encourages creative thinking and storytelling. ( )

Sometimes words are not even necessary, and that's exactly what makes this book fly from page to page.

The title says it all: fly! A baby bird has been nurtured by its mother and has finally reached the point, where it should learn to spread its own wings. But the nest is very high in the tree and the ground is a long way down. And how does one fly, anyway?

I can't imagine young readers not liking this book. There are no words...a plus for those who love to flip through books on their own...and yet, none are necessary. The illustrations say it all. The little bird is such a cutie, especially since it starts out small before growing to the size, where it needs to learn how to fly. The first scenes of the mother's care warm the heart. But the baby bird isn't always a joy to be around.

These pages are packed with scenes and moments which are sure to draw a few giggles and many smiles. First, the little bird has a bit of an attitude. Add its very active imagination and a mother, who only lets the bird push her so far...and it's quite a fun adventure. It's a book, which is sure to become a favorite.

I received a complimentary copy and found it to be such a fun 'read' that I'm leaving my honest thoughts. ( )
