Bakery owner Hannah Swensen is leaving Lake Eden to help a friend in sunny California. But an unexpected phone call swiftly brings her back to a cold Minnesota winter . . . and murder . . . When Hannah learns that her sister Michelle's boyfriend, Detective Lonnie Murphy, is the prime suspect in a murder case, she goes straight from a movie studio sound stage to the Los Angeles airport. Back in frigid Minnesota, she discovers that proving Lonnie's innocence will be harder than figuring out what went wrong with a recipe. Lonnie remembers only parts of the night he went out to a local bar and ended up driving a very impaired woman home. He knows he helped her to her bedroom, but he doesn't recall anything else until he woke up on her couch the following morning. When he went to the bedroom to check on her, he was shocked to discover she was dead. Hannah doesn't know what to believe--only that exonerating a suspect who can't remember is almost impossible, especially since Lonnie's brother, Detective Rick Murphy, and Lonnie's partner, Chief Detective Mike Kingston, have been taken off the case. Before everything comes crashing down on Lonnie like a heaping slice of coconut layer cake, it'll be up to Hannah to rack up enough clues to toast a flaky killer . . .… (plus d'informations)

Mystery

It was nice to venture back to this world. This was a fun read. I liked that mystery and murder was closely tied to hannah family and felt a lot of buy into the the mystery. I thought his book did feature more of the towns and the side characters then have seen in the previous couple of books. I did not see the ending coming until it was right under my nose. def a new fav in series ( )

I've read other books in this series. I'm not sure if I've read them in order though. This one seems to have come before another one that I've read since in this one they're talking about Ross leaving Hannah (and I think what happened to Ross was covered in a different book I read).

I also felt like I missed something about Hannah's condo. Hannah's living arrangements were confusing to me. I think she was staying with her mom and Doc before she and her mother went to California. But then when she comes back, she ends up staying with Norman because her mother and Doc are both away and she doesn't want to stay alone. But then Lynn is also staying with Norman which makes me wonder how big his domicile is.

I feel a little sorry for Norman. He obviously loves Hannah--and I don't think she loves him in the way he loves her.

I still like Moishe (the cat).

As usual for the genre, Hannah ends up doing something on her own that she probably shouldn't have done--though to be fair to her, I don't think the person she visited was someone she thought was a suspect until she got there. ( )

Overall, this read like a LitRPG for baking. While this is the first in this series that I've read, it read like a stand alone. Gave all the needed description so I wasn't lost or feeling like i needed to start at book one.

The cast only seemed to be in her life for her baking, I would feel bad if that really is how people act when they have a friend that is a baker. The Audiobook read out the recipes at the end of each chapter which was really strange.

All of the characters felt immature, and the main character and her mothers relationship was weird. I also didn't know what to make of the awkward love triangle thing that was happening. Make me giggle a few times, thinking what in the world?!

But all the words outside of the ones that were discussing baking, felt like filler words to get to the baking scenes faster. Maybe that's the point of the story? But not what I prefer in a cozy.

The ending was very lackluster, none of the clues added up to the ending, and the culprit didn't make sense at all for me based the scene that was laid out . Just felt like the mystery/investigation was just filler sub plot to the baking, and the killer was just chosen out of a hat.

It was an okay read, but I won't continue the series. First time I've ever read a traditionally published cozy mystery. ( )
