Chameleon Effect.
It's a series that I inexplicably enjoy, for why should I like Secular YA Romance.
If I had to make a complaint against this novel, it would be that Idris seems more two dimensional in this book. ( )

Fantastic sci-fi book. After jumping straight into the 2nd book, it's easy to see what became of the first which made it really interesting and makes me wan to dig into the first book. The way the book flips from one person to another did confuse me sometimes with a who's this again scenario, but it was a great read and would really recommend ad a series. ( )

Sci-fi and paranormal. Be prepared for that.

When I received it, through the Early Reviewers program, I thought I'd have to buy the 1st book to be able to read this. You don't really need the read the first to be able to jump into the second book. While the writing was good, I just couldn't find myself able to enjoy this. ( )

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of LibraryThing and the author. It is the second of a series and Hayes did a good job of informing readers who didn't read the first one of details that were key to understanding Book 2. The female protagonist is a shape-shifting alien who has been raised as a human being; something she apparently discovers in the first book.
The male protagonist is the human boy who apparently grew very fond of her in book one, but messes that up royally toward the end of the book. In Perfect Pitch, Cadi and Dean are living in separate states. Life has gone on for both of them. Cadi and her foster family have moved to a rural area of New York while Dean is finishing up high school in Vermont. He still misses Cadi but is eager to start college and get away from his alcoholic mom and abusive father. What holds him there is his younger brother Ty, who needs a responsible adult to take care of and protect him from neglect, or worse.
The worst happens when his mom invites the dad back into the home. Dean will have to take Ty with him if/when he leaves, but he can't take Ty to college with him. As the situation unfolds though, Cadi's dad offers Dean a job at their place without Cadi's knowledge. When her dad tells her, she is thunderstruck. She now has a very strong bond with Idris, her bond mate from her own planet, and is not at all sure that Idris and Dean should meet.
She and Idris have enough to do, preparing a place for others of their kind to reunite where Cadi and Idris can provide protection from another vicious race of aliens whose goal is to annihilate Cadi and her people. Will Dean's presence ruin everything again? ( )

Setting aliens in the world of teenagers just finishing high school is an intriguing premise for this young adult novel.
The human teenager, Dean, must protect his little brother, Ty, from their abusive father and their indifferent mother.
The alien teenager, Cadi, must protect the crystal tree that provides life force for her species.
The enemy alien race that seeks out Cadi and her bonded partner, Idris are closing in on their location.
Can Cadi trust Dean after he outed her telekinesis last year?
Will Dean help her in the fight against her enemy?
Will Dean, Ty, and Shri accept her as a lizard-like alien?

The novel kept my interest. ( )
