When travelling cook Jenny Starling is asked to cater the tea for a village cricket match, the last thing she expects is to be faced with the murder of one of the players. Jenny must choose her next strokes very carefully - it's going to take some fast deliveries by the amateur sleuth to crack the case and find the killer. Jenny Starling has been employed to do the catering for the annual cricket grudge match between Much Rousham and Steeple Clinton. Though busy she does pick up quite a bit of gossip which might be useful when one of the players is found dead. But then another body is discovered. She finds herself helping Detective Inspector Laurence Causon in discovering the facts
Another enjoyable well-written mystery in this series. Jenny is certainly a likeable character, and the rest of the characters are certainly well described. The book can be read as a standalone story.

Jenny Starling is a traveling cook who is rather looking forward to her next assignment. She is about to cater for the village cricket match. Per normal Jenny style, she takes stock of all the guests, all while crafting just the perfect menu with her exquisite recipes.

When Tristan Jones, a man with far too many enemies, turns up dead, Jenny is afforded the opportunity of helping the police in their investigation. Nothing is as it seemed as Jenny works hard on figuring everyone at the event. It is only reasonable that one of the players, or their family member, is undeniably guilty of the murder.

It doesn't take Jenny long to discover that Tristin Jones had plenty of enemies. For one thing, he was a young man with more than one paramour. What's more is that as a stockbroker, the way he handled people's money left a lot to be desired.

This delightful read, which was formerly published as Just Not Cricket by Faith Martin's pen name, Joyce Cato, is a delightful cozy mystery where Jenny excels in both solving unlikely murders while developing scrumptious recipes.

The previous titles in this series are The Birthday Mystery, The Winter Mystery, The Riverboat Mystery and The Oxford Mystery. I definitely look forward to continuing this engaging series by Faith Martin.

Many thanks to Joffe Books and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion. ( )

I didn't realize this was part of series when I started reading but when I figured it out I was able to find the rest of the series on GoodReads and bring myself up to speed. This was a quick read, full of suspense and intrigue from the very beginning.

This is a lively locked room murder mystery (involving a small number of suspects) set in present day rural England. The star of the show is "travelling cook" Jenny Starling. She has been hired to cater for a village afternoon cricket match. As soon as she arrives at the field in the morning to prepare her dishes, she starts hearing gossip and rumours circulating about the players and their friends and relatives. When the village golden boy (and son of the local aristocracy) turns up dead, Jenny becomes one of the investigating team, working with the local police. It's an entertaining whodunit mystery and Jenny rises to the challenge of identifying the killer.

There's a briskly paced story, told with enthusiasm, and makes for a light and enjoyable read. Something to read on a pleasant sunny summer afternoon. Some might complain that none of Jenny's recipes are included in the book, but that's OK with me. There's a glossary of English slang included for US readers that might come in handy, although it does not cover all of the slang found in the book. This book is one of a series featuring Jenny Starling, but it can easily be read as a standalone.

Thanks to Joffe Books London and Netgalley for providing me with a review eBook copy of this book. ( )
