"Some of the most important issues of our time were no less important 100 years ago. America in 1919, at the close of World War I, was shaken from the events of large-scale warfare, fearing a Communist takeover, and facing an incredible amount of social and political change. From Prohibition to women's suffrage, the labor strikes to the violence of the Red Summer and the Red Scare, this book explores each major movement of 1919. Showing how these events were interrelated and examining their continued relevance to our country a century later, Martin Sandler offers a unique historical perspective on the trajectory of the major movements of the 20th century. Showing readers how every current event has unique and fascinating history preceding it, this book will help them better understand the world they live in and the change many still seek today, offering educators a framework for discussing historical perspective and progress"--… (plus d'informations)

I finally had to stop reading this book. The author, who teaches American history uses topics in this book to provide his own soapbox. How does one go from a chapter about the strikes in 1919 to the hazards of global warming? And this is what our children are being taught? This is abysmal. No wonder children are challenged to understand history, let alone appreciate it. ( )

Excellent. 1919 (like 2020 will be) is one of those pivotal years that changes everything. Well-written and assembled, a goldmine for kids (and adults). ( )

The author lays out significant events that happened in 1919 that would have a lasting impact on the history that came after. For example, the Red Scare would lead to the Cold War; labor strikes brought about the power of labor unions; suffrage and temperance gave women more voice and power; and the "Red Summer" was precursor to the civil rights movement. Readers may regard the year as dinosaur-ancient, but thoughtful youths will appreciate the connections to current issues. ( )
