Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows: the disappearance of Genevieve's young son, followed by the premature death of her husband. But Genevieve rose from those ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her--until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school. Genevieve kicked her out with nothing but the clothes on her back...but Emma took with her the most important London possession: the strength not just to survive but to thrive. And indeed, Emma has built a wonderful life for herself and her teenage daughter, Riley. So what is Emma to do when Genevieve does the one thing Emma never expected of her and, after not speaking to her for nearly two decades, calls and asks for help?… (plus d'informations)

Loved this book.....Higgins writes feel good stories with delightful character and relationship development. Emma and Riley---what a perfect mother and daughrer....yes, fun to read through the ups and downs...having the book just continue on would have been...perfect...no need to reach the end!!! ( )

My fondest wish is that Kristan Higgins would go back to writing romance with quirky characters filled with heart and humor. This is something altogether different, and what she seems to have switched to. Fans of Nicholas Sparks will appreciate the change.

For my part, I don't really appreciate all the angst, the bonding over shared deadbeat dads, the quick forgiveness for years of mistreatment. She does a brilliant job of justifying all of it, and giving it a therapist twist (and funny how they all become therapists all of a sudden). I wasn't really pulling for anyone, and a lot of the characters were overdrawn for me. Exaggerated. A perfect mom? A perfect daughter? Call out the therapists, because there are certain life stages we all have to go through. The three-year-old terror? There's a lot going on.

The writing is solid, as always. The POV is deep, so we get to see inside everyone's mind and thought processes. As far as story goes, I miss the old Kristan Higgins. ( )

A beautiful family saga with some lovely characters and heart.

Though the ending with Clark and Sheppard was almost too nicely wrapped up... ( )

I love Kristan Higgins’ books and the Connecticut settings. While Stoningham isn’t the name of a town here, it feels very familiar.

I listened to this book on audio and that may skew my overall rating (I’m thinking in the neighborhood of 3.75). The main characters are all read by different voice actors, i choice I always like as it makes following along much easier. But one of the four main characters was so annoyingly frustrating to me! Genevieve is the 80-something matriarch of a family that has enjoyed riches, but suffered more than its share of struggles and tragedy. She is complex, insufferable, confusing, frustrating and sympathetic. I felt many of these emotions while listening to her chapters.

As in many of Higgins novels, this book is led by a strong cast of female characters. Riley, the youngest, may be my favorite. She’s so likable, relatable and hopeful. ( )
