Winston Radhauser Mystery #4
Looking for a series to sink your teeth into with characters well fleshed out that you can relate to? This is a series I highly recommend!
Wind Radhause has taken time off to be with and support his family when his boss calls asking him to interview a high school student admitted to the hospital. When he arrives at the hospital he meets a young man who has suffered a horrible injury not only to his flesh but to his spirit. It seems there is a new group in town spouting hate and some of the group is also acting out in ways that reflect their racist, bigoted, homophobic, sick beliefs. There is more than one teenager identified that has experienced torture handed out by this evil group but then when murder occurs the stakes are raised and the search for culprits intensifies.
Radhauser really wanted to be there for his wife but his need to find and bring to justice the evil doers must take priority and he is lucky enough to have a wife that, though she really needs him, stands behind him.
This book deals with evil and as the threads of the story are tugged at and information is exposed the group is found but it is highly possible that some threads lead to dead ends or perhaps other culprits rather than to the supposed only perpetrators of the crimes.
I have to say at this point that when Jackson’s backstory from high school is mentioned I could relate. I graduated from high school in 1970 and had good friends that were black. I had a teacher who warned me away from one boyfriend as he was “black”. I went to a restaurant with a group and sitting at the table with the only black in the group found that we would be served last and perhaps not at all. I lived in Southern California – not the South – and was astonished that racists lived nearby. I can see what happened in this book still happening today though I really wish it would not.
This is a superb story and one I highly recommend. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and hope that Wind and his wife will have smooth sailing at home even though he will continue to have to deal with evildoers.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
