So much rape and violence towards women. Normally I would have DNF’d, I wanted to DNF. I really hate reading about these subjects but my loyalty to Lindsey, Joe and the WMC kept me reading. Low score based on subject matter not writing or characters. I was also disappointed in the end. This book starts with Lindsay and her husband, Joe, entering a legal proceeding for the ICC at the Hague. A woman named Anna is testifying against a man from her former country. He is appealing charges of war crimes that were put against him. Then, the story goes back 5 years in time.
Lindsay is investigating the disappearance of 3 schoolteachers after the death of a fourth teacher. Joe is on his way home from work one night when he encounters Anna on the side of the street crying. He stops and talks to her and discovers that she thinks she's seen a man from her former country that did horrible things to people in her town. Joe decides to start investigating.
Most of these books continue in the timeline but this one does not. There is no mention of Julie, their daughter because it mainly takes place before she's born. Lindsay is also working for Jacobi so Brady isn't even in the picture yet and both Yuki and Cindy are single. (
