This was a book club book for me, and it was great for discussion. Unfortunately, it was hard to get because the book switched publishers and is not available in any digital format or for purchase till February 2020, so we had to rely on library hard copies. The book did have some laugh out loud funny parts, but it was also really disheartening. The beauracratic failures in our school systems, that are by design and advertised as improvements, are harmful to our children and teachers, and are often the result of for-profit lobbying rather than misguided ideas from educators or parents. Had to read in chunks because parts were just a bit too real. But I laughed out loud multiple times, and while the characters and situations might be intended to be hyperbole, I've been in quite similar situations in my teaching career. Kind of nice to read it at the end of a school year, as it made me feel a little less alone in the problematic landscape that is public education. I still love my career, and love what I do. What I think the book does best is highlight what I learned years ago...when I finally stop teaching, it won't be because of the kids. I always check Little Free Libraries despite them almost always being full of romance, murder and fad diet books, none of which I care for. However, while on vacation in Taylor's Falls, Minnesota, i happened upon this gem outside a dentist's office. I liked the cover and had never heard of it but dug right in and was delighted at my find. A funny, satirical novel about a high school and it's teachers, made funnier because it's all horrifyingly true across this test loving, finger pointing country. Perfection. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Brae Hill Valley is a struggling high school in one the biggest cities in Texas. English teacher Lena Wright, a spoken-word poet, can never seem to truly connect with her students. Hernan D. Hernandez is confident in front of his biology classes, but tongue-tied around the woman he most wants to impress. Down the hall, math teacher Maybelline Galang focuses on the numbers as she struggles to parent her daughter, while Coach Ray hustles his troubled football team toward another winning season. Recording it all is idealistic second-year history teacher Kaytee Mahoney, whose anonymous blog gains new readers by the day as it drifts ever further from her in-class reality. And this year, a new superintendent is determined to leave his own mark on the school--even if that means shutting the whole place down. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

I found myself morbidly chuckling through the whole book. It was razor-sharp and very well done. Anyone experienced in education will recognize parts of this story. ( )
